Date: Thursday, January 25, 2018
Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Location: Minnesota Literacy Council main office, 700 Raymond Avenue, Suite 180, Saint Paul, MN 55114
Alison Shank (Adult ESL Instructor at the Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning) spent five months living in Mae Sot, a city in western Thailand where thousands of refugees and migrants from Myanmar reside. In this session, she’ll share her experiences preparing young students to take the Cambridge English Test; training Burmese teachers of English at local migrant learning centers; and teaching English and teacher-training classes at a college in Mae La Refugee Camp. Alison will share what these experiences taught her about her Karen learners at the Hubbs Center, and will present a brief slideshow.
Stephanie Hanson (Teaching Specialist in the University of Minnesota English Language Program) volunteered at two refugee camps (Moria and Kara Tepe) on the Greek island of Lesvos for two months in 2017. In this session she'll share her experience as a member of the Boat Refugee Foundation's psychosocial support team and describe living conditions, educational resources, and medical assistance in the camps.
