Description: Cydnee Sanders (AmeriCorps VISTA with Open Door Learning Center – Northside) and her group from Saint Joan of Arc Catholic community spent five days at the United States-Mexico border. In this session, she’ll share powerful stories of her experiences and encounters in Tucson, the Arizona desert and Nogales, Mexico. You’ll learn more about the United States’ current immigration policies, such as Operation Streamline, and how this policy is tearing families apart. Cydnee will also discuss how Border Patrol targets volunteers who attempt to help migrants, for example by putting water out in the desert. More importantly, you’ll hear stories about the amazing and brave people in border towns, in both Mexico and the United States, who are supporting migrants and families fleeing violence or extreme poverty in hopes of a better life.
Margaret Miller (volunteer classroom assistant at Open Door Learning Center – Lake Street) will share heart-breaking and heart-warming stories of her volunteer experience with two amazing Greek non-governmental organizations that provide services to refugees who risk everything to flee a life of war, famine and poverty. The nonprofit organization Chios Eastern Shore Response Team provides first response services to migrants coming on small rafts to the island of Chios from Turkey. ANKAA, an organization in Athens, provides job training for refugees while they wait for their asylum status in the European Union. Hear about Margaret’s work teaching English, developing English language curriculum and providing services to refugees and learn how to get involved as a volunteer.
