Latino Cultures: An Overview of History, Cultures and Languages
Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2020
Time: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Cost: There is no fee for this training, but your tax-deductible donation will support our tutor training program and literacy learners across Minnesota!
Description: Presented by Rodolfo Gutierrez, executive director of HACER (Hispanic Advocacy and Community Empowerment through Research), this webinar will address the story of millions of people residing together in the United States from diverse origins. We’ll look at how Latino communities are seen in the U.S. and in Minnesota, and how the single label of “Latino” obscures the differences among communities. We’ll discuss the invisibility of several groups of people who are predicted to be the largest minority in 2020, based on stereotypes that hide the positive contributions they bring to our communities. Given changing demographics and the obvious and well-documented achievement gap, it is important to look at a different narrative in order to better serve and welcome these communities. We will engage in a conversation that will address perspectives and expectations toward the Latino population in Minnesota and in the U.S. You are invited to join us in building a better understanding of what being Latino means today.
